A Garden in the Making

When we initially began the project, our plan was to create raised gardening beds. Through research, we discovered that these types of gardens do well when it comes to soil drainage. With Lakeland having the largest amount of rainfall in Florida, we figured raised beds would be a safe bet.
We began on Friday, February 3rd by digging up the old beds. In order to reduce waste (as one of our projects is focused on environmental sustainability) we will rebuild a compost bin with the old gardening bed wood.

The following Monday we returned and we began building the new bed. A long 10'x40' was completed by the time we left that day. In addition, we began to clip the old grape vines; which will eventually be removed along with the trellises. Two hours later, I don't think we all knew what we had gotten ourselves into.
This coming Friday we hope to finish the garden setup by creating another 10'x40' raised bed, staining the wood, and filling with soil. The goal is to remove the grape trees and then we will be ready for classes!
